I don’t believe in ghosts either but I do believe spiritual entities, both good and bad, can be felt and sensed by some people and that rooms, areas, etc can give off a “feel.” I remember years ago my husband and I both went into a little shop and, as we usually do, we split up to look at things that interest us but within a few minutes he was by my side. I knew why. I asked him if he felt it and he said he did and we left. We both felt a strong warning to leave and we did.

That is a washstand with a mirror and it is Eastlake, my favorite. Eastlake will have carving on it, but sometimes it’s called spoon carving. It’s very different from Victorian, which will be very curvy. Clean with Murphy oil soap. Furniture butter after will do for a while.

You never know what you may find. The older folks didn't believe in banks. Pulled up two layers of linoleum in granny's house and found $200. That was her safe space. They didn't have trash pickup way back when and would have a burn pile. I sifted through and found an ornate braass doorknob. Didn't know it was until I started cleaning it. Added it to a door inside the house. Your room Didn't feel bad. When seeing someones life in a room that somebody ransacked is disrespectful and sad. It can affect you.

I have a lipstick tube like that.. found it in my treasure garden.. The area was a dump site in 1948 after a tornado went through Florence SD...I found peices of a small prison doll .I made her a new body.. A phonograph crank. Glass marbels etc..😊

I completely understand how you feel about the need to go through everything and not just shovel it all into a dumpster. I inherited my Mom's house after she passed which she had inherited from her parent's. I had, at least, 3 generation's worth of stuff to go through. Three outbuildings, an attic, three closets, and 5 dressers and chests to go through of clothes, papers, pictures, tools, furniture, kitchenware, memorabilia, and memories. It's hard as hell. Especially when you have to do it all alone. Then, my Dad passed and my step-Mom sent me a box of his stuff,. When my great aunt passed away, she left me all of her pictures, so there was another treasure-trove to go through. You just have to take your time. Don't let anyone push you to hurry, even yourself. It'll take as long as it takes. I wish you well.

This is your house, you decide what to keep and what to give or destroy. The fact that that it has such age and decay is not unusual I love old homes and I appreciate that you are trying to preserve what you can and give away things to people who will respect it. I love the old denim jacket it’s amazing! Please don’t worry about judgement of others what counts is your opinion and what matters to you. I saw the home in the beginning so it’s a transition and will take time, thank you for saving it and trying to do what you can. Be safe!

My Grandmothers name was Byrd. She was from N. Carolina. We have family in Maryland and Delaware also.

Most furniture was finished with amber shellac back then.

Stay away from murphy oil because it will make it sticky. If you want to clean Murphy oil from furniture use the paint thinner and fine steel wool then wipe with paper towels. Best way to clean wood or metal.

The finish has crazed which is that rough part you referred to. It’s actually desirable by some people. I think the finish is original and maybe touched up here and there. The best cleaner for wood is Paint Thinner. I sometimes clean an old piece with paint thinner and then paste wax with dark furniture wax and buff with clean cloth.
